CRE: The Early Life of Jesus Christ

Subtopic: The Wisemen (The Magi)

For learners aged 8 — Kenya

Learning Objectives

  • Know who the Wisemen (Magi) were.
  • Tell the story of how they found baby Jesus.
  • Learn the meanings of their gifts and the lessons we get from the story.

Short Story (Easy)

A long time ago, after Jesus was born in Bethlehem, some men called the Wisemen or Magi saw a bright star. They thought the star meant a new king had been born. They travelled a long way, across deserts and hills, following the star. At last the star stopped over the place where Jesus was. The Wisemen met Mary, Joseph and baby Jesus. They bowed down and gave Jesus three special gifts: gold, frankincense and myrrh.

Who were the Wisemen?

  • They were wise men or scholars from other countries (sometimes called Magi).
  • They studied the stars and signs in the sky.
  • They wanted to honour the new king the star showed them.

What gifts did they give and what they mean

  • Gold — a gift for a king (shows Jesus is special).
  • Frankincense — used in worship (shows Jesus is holy and to be worshipped).
  • Myrrh — used for healing and burial (reminds us that Jesus will suffer for people).

Important Lessons

  1. We should follow God's signs — the Wisemen followed the star.
  2. We show respect by giving and worshipping (they brought gifts).
  3. People from many places can come to Jesus — He is for everyone.
  4. Obedience to God is important (the Wisemen obeyed the star and later did not tell Herod).

Easy Activities (Class or Home)

  • Draw the star and the Wisemen on camels. Colour the gifts bright!
  • Role play: one child is Mary, one is Joseph, one is baby Jesus (doll) and three are Wisemen bringing gifts.
  • Memory game: learn the three gifts — gold, frankincense, myrrh.
  • Ask: How would you show respect if someone special visited your house?

Questions to answer

  1. Who followed the star?
  2. Where did the star stop?
  3. Name the three gifts the Wisemen brought.
  4. What can we learn from the Wisemen today?

Memory Verse (Simple)

"They opened their treasures and gave him gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh." — (Matthew 2:11, simple words)
