Who is the Holy Spirit?

The Holy Spirit is God. He is the third person of the Trinity: God the Father (Baba), God the Son (Yesu), and God the Holy Spirit (Roho Mtakatifu). They are three persons but one God.

The Holy Spirit is our helper and friend. He loves all children and helps us to know Jesus and to do what is right.

How the Holy Spirit helps us

  • Comforts us when we are sad — He makes us feel brave.
  • Teaches us about Jesus — He helps us understand the Bible.
  • Helps us pray — He is our helper when we talk to God.
  • Helps people in the church to work together — choir, Sunday school, and teachers.
  • Makes us want to do good things like sharing and helping others.

Fruits of the Spirit (simple)

When the Holy Spirit lives in us, we show good things called the Fruit of the Spirit:

  • Love — we care for others.
  • Joy — we are happy because of Jesus.
  • Peace — we are calm and friendly.
  • Kindness — we help and are gentle.
  • Self-control — we can choose to do right.
(These are short and easy for kids to remember.)

How to invite the Holy Spirit

  1. Pray and say you are sorry for wrong things (repent).
  2. Ask Jesus to come into your heart.
  3. Go to church and be baptised (this is a sign of new life).
  4. Ask the Holy Spirit to help you every day — He answers when we pray.

A short prayer for children

"Roho Mtakatifu, please help me to love others, be kind, and follow Jesus. Be with my family and my church. Amen."

Memory verse (easy)

"The Holy Spirit will teach you." — John 14:26 (short version)

(You can learn this and say it at Sunday school.)

Fun activities (at home or church)

  • Draw a dove and write "Roho Mtakatifu" — decorate it and hang in your room.
  • Play "Wind Game": blow a feather across a table — talk about how we cannot see the wind, but we know it is there, like the Holy Spirit.
  • Practice the memory verse with your Sunday school teacher or parents.
  • Do a kindness chart — each time you are kind, put a sticker; thank the Holy Spirit for helping you.

Questions to talk about (with your teacher or parent)

  • Who is the Holy Spirit?
  • How has the Holy Spirit helped you or someone you know?
  • Which Fruit of the Spirit can you show at home or at school?
Tip: In Kenyan churches we often sing, pray and learn about the Holy Spirit in Sunday school. Ask your teacher about Roho Mtakatifu today!
