CRE: The Church — Prayer 🙏

For learners aged 8 (Kenya)

1. What is prayer?

Prayer is talking to God. It is how we tell God we love Him, say thank you, say sorry, and ask for help. We can pray at home, at school, or in church. ⛪

2. Types of prayer

  • Praise – We say God is great and we love Him. (e.g., "Thank you, God, for your love!") ⭐
  • Thanksgiving – We thank God for food, family, school and friends. 🍞👨‍👩‍👧‍👦
  • Sorry / Confession – We tell God when we have done wrong and ask for forgiveness. 🙇‍♀️
  • Supplication (Asking) – We ask God to help us, others, or our country. (e.g., pray for sick people.) ❤️

3. When can we pray?

You can pray anytime! Here are some times children in Kenya often pray:

  • In the morning when you wake up 🌞
  • Before meals (bless the food) 🍽️
  • At church on Sunday and during Sunday school ⛪
  • Before bed to say thank you and sorry 🌙

4. How to pray (easy steps)

  1. Find a quiet place — at home, in church, or your prayer corner.
  2. Fold your hands or close your eyes if you like. (You may kneel or sit.) 🙏
  3. Start by praising God: "Thank you, God." ⭐
  4. Say sorry for anything wrong you did.
  5. Ask God for help for you, your family, friends, and Kenya. 🇰🇪
  6. End by saying "Amen" — that means "I agree" or "So be it." ✨

5. A short prayer you can say

Dear God, thank you for my family and school. Help me to be kind and to learn well. Please bless my friends and Kenya. Amen. 🇰🇪🙏

The Lord's Prayer (short version)

Our Father in heaven,
Give us what we need today.
Forgive us our wrong doings.
Help us to be kind to others.
Amen.

6. Prayer in Kenyan churches

In Kenya, children pray in many kinds of churches: Catholic, Anglican, Africa Inland Church (AIC), SDA, Pentecostal and more. On Sundays at church we sing songs in English and Kiswahili and pray together. A teacher or pastor may lead a short prayer in Sunday school.

Simple Kiswahili prayer line: "Mungu, tunakushukuru kwa familia na chakula. Amina." (God, we thank you for family and food. Amen.)

7. Activities (fun and simple)

  • Draw your prayer: Draw one thing you will thank God for and share it in class. 🎨
  • Prayer corner: Make a little box with your name and a short prayer card to keep at home.
  • Memory prayer: Learn the short prayer above and say it every morning for one week.
  • Class prayer time: Practice a 1-minute prayer at the start of class — one child can lead each day.

8. Questions to answer

  1. What is prayer?
  2. Name two types of prayer.
  3. When do you pray at home?
  4. Say the short prayer you learned.
Teacher note: Encourage kind, simple language. Respect different church traditions and let each child share how their family prays.
Keep praying — God loves to hear from children! ❤️🙏
