What is a church?
A church is both a building where Christians gather for worship and a community of people who meet to pray, sing, learn from the Bible, and help one another. In Kenya, churches can be large cathedrals, small rural chapels, or community halls used by local congregations.
Main roles and functions
- Worship and prayer (services, hymns, sermons) 🎵
- Sacraments and rites: baptism, communion, marriage, funerals ✝️
- Teaching and Bible study: Sunday school, youth groups, Bible groups 📖
- Social support: charity, community fundraising (Harambee), food aid, counselling 🤝
- Education and health: many churches run schools, clinics and outreach programmes 🏫🏥
- Community leadership: conflict resolution, public information, mobilisation for local causes 🗣️

Churches in the Kenyan context

- Local customs combine with Christian practice: church services may include Swahili or local languages, Kenyan hymns, and community calls to help those in need.
Key words (with simple meanings)
- Congregation — the people who gather to worship.
- Sermon — a talk by the pastor or priest about the Bible.
- Sacrament — a religious ceremony (e.g., baptism, communion).
- Harambee — community fundraising or pulling together to solve a problem (widely used in Kenya).
- Choir — group who sings during services.
