CRE: The Holy Bible

Subtopic: The Importance of Obeying Parents 👪

Specific Learning Outcomes
  • By the end of the lesson, the learner will be able to recite the memory verse: “Children, obey your parents” (Ephesians 6:1) with help.
  • List at least three reasons why we should obey our parents (safety, love, God’s command).
  • Show through a short role-play one way to obey a parent at home or at school.
  • Tell one Bible story or example that teaches respect for parents.
Memory Verse

“Children, obey your parents in the Lord: for this is right.” — Ephesians 6:1 (simple)

What does "obeying parents" mean?

Obeying parents means listening to them and doing what they ask when it is good and safe. It means showing respect and love every day.

Why should we obey our parents? ❤️
  • Parents keep us safe (for example: hold hands when crossing the road or when boarding a matatu).
  • Parents care for us and teach us what is right (school work, hygiene, prayer).
  • God tells us to obey and honour our parents (Exodus 20:12).
  • Obeying brings peace at home and helps family life to be happy.
Simple Examples for a 7-year-old (Kenyan context)
  • When mama asks you to wash your hands before eating — you wash them.
  • When papa asks you to put on your school uniform — you do it.
  • If an elder tells you to sit quietly during church service — you listen.
  • When told to come home before dark (curfew) — you obey to stay safe.
📖
Short Bible example: The Bible teaches children to obey and honour parents. We learn these lessons from God’s word and from stories in the Bible.
Suggested Learning Experiences (Activities)
  1. Teacher reads the memory verse aloud. Pupils repeat line by line (choral response).
  2. Story time: Tell a short story about a child who obeyed parents and was kept safe. Ask simple questions afterwards.
  3. Role-play (5–8 minutes): In small groups, pupils act out one scene (e.g., being asked to wash hands before eating). Other groups watch and cheer.
  4. Drawing: Children draw one thing their parents ask them to do (e.g., sweeping, washing hands, going to school). Put drawings on the classroom wall.
  5. Song and movement: Teach a short song about obeying parents with simple actions (clap when you hear “obey”, point to mum/dad on “parents”).
  6. Home task: Take the memory verse card home and practice with a parent. Ask a parent to sign a sticker when the child obeys one instruction that day.
Assessment (Simple checks)
  • Can the child say or repeat the memory verse with help?
  • Can the child name three reasons to obey parents?
  • Did the child take part in the role-play and show an example of obeying?
  • Teacher ticks a simple checklist: Verse, Reasons, Role-play, Home task.
Closing

Remind pupils that obeying parents is pleasing to God and keeps us safe. Encourage them to practise one act of obedience today.

🙏
Simple class prayer suggestion: “Dear God, thank you for our parents. Help us to obey and love them. Amen.”
Note: Keep activities short and lively for 7-year-olds. Use local examples (home, school, roadside safety) to make teaching meaningful.
