CRE Notes: The Early Life of Jesus Christ

Subtopic: Jesus Helps His Father Joseph

Jesus grew up in Nazareth in a family like many families in Kenya today. His father Joseph was a carpenter. As a boy, Jesus helped Joseph in the workshop.

What did Jesus do to help Joseph?

  • He learned how to use simple tools like a saw and a hammer.
  • He helped carry wood and clean the workshop.
  • He obeyed and listened to Joseph’s instructions.
  • He practised doing careful work so the things he made were good.

Why is this important for us?

Helping at home teaches us responsibility, patience and respect for our parents. In Kenya, children can also help by sweeping, fetching water, or helping in the garden.

Memory Verse

"Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right." (Ephesians 6:1)

Short Prayer

Dear God, help me to obey my parents and work hard like Jesus. Amen.

Things to do (Activity)

  1. Ask your parent to show you a safe job to help at home (e.g., sweeping, setting the table).
  2. Try to do that job for one week and say thank you to your parent when you finish.
  3. Talk about how helping made you feel — proud, useful, happy?

Questions (for class or home)

  • Who was Joseph? (Jesus’ father who was a carpenter)
  • Name one thing Jesus learned from Joseph.
  • Tell one way you can help your parents this week.

Teacher note: You can read Luke 2:41–52 with the class to discuss how Jesus grew in wisdom and obedience. The Bible does not give many details about carpentry, but Christian tradition tells us Jesus learned Joseph's work and helped him.
