Grade 2 CRE Church – Prayer and the Holy Spirit Notes
Prayer and the Holy Spirit 🕊️🙏
Subject: CRE — Topic: Church — For children aged 7 (Kenya)
What we will learn
- What prayer is.
- Who the Holy Spirit (Roho Mtakatifu) is.
- How the Holy Spirit helps us when we pray.
"The Spirit helps us pray." — (Romans 8:26, simple)
Swahili: "Roho anatusaidia kuomba."
What is prayer?
Prayer is talking to God. We can say thank you, sorry, or ask for help. We can pray alone or with our family and at church in Kenya, like at Sunday school.
Who is the Holy Spirit?
The Holy Spirit is God's helper. The Bible sometimes shows the Holy Spirit as a dove 🕊️ or as fire 🔥. The Holy Spirit lives with believers and helps them love God and others.
How the Holy Spirit helps when we pray
- Helps us know what to say when we do not know words.
- Comforts us when we are sad.
- Shows us how to pray for others (family, teachers, friends).
- Quiet your heart.
- Praise God (say thank you).
- Say sorry for wrong things.
- Ask God for help for you and others.
- Say thank you and Amen.
"Dear God, thank you for my family. Please help me to be kind. Thank you for the Holy Spirit. Amen."
A fun activity
Draw a dove or a flame on paper. Colour it. On the dove write one name of someone you will pray for today (a friend, teacher, or parent).
"Holy Spirit, help me pray, guide my heart and show the way. Thank you, Lord, for your love, send Your help from up above." (Repeat)
Questions to think about
- Who helps you when you pray?
- Name one thing you can say thank you for today.
- Who will you pray for this week?
Practice the short prayer and memory verse with the children each morning or at the start of class. Use simple Kiswahili words to help understanding (e.g., "Roho Mtakatifu = Holy Spirit"). Encourage them to draw and share who they prayed for.
End with a simple class prayer: "Dear God, thank you for the Holy Spirit. Help us to pray and to love. Amen." 🙏
