CRE — The Early Life of Jesus Christ

Subtopic: Jesus Christ Worked

🔨 🪚

Simple idea for P1–P3 (age 7): When Jesus was a child he grew up in Nazareth and learned a trade. He worked as a carpenter with Joseph. He helped his family and the people around him. From Jesus we learn to work hard, help others and obey our parents and teachers.

Specific Learning Outcomes (SLOs)

  • By the end of the lesson, the learner will be able to name the kind of work Jesus did (carpenter / "seremala").
  • Describe one or two tasks Jesus may have done (making chairs, doors, or helping Joseph).
  • Explain in simple words why work is important (helps family, serves others).
  • Show one way they can help at home or school (tidy toys, sweep, help set the table).
  • Recite a short line: "Jesus grew in wisdom and in good deeds" (Luke 2:52) or say it in Kiswahili: "Yesu alikua akibalehe kwa busara na kwa fadhili."

Content for the Teacher (simple points)

  1. Jesus lived in Nazareth with Mary and Joseph. Joseph worked as a carpenter (seremala), and Jesus learned to work too.
  2. Carpentry means making things from wood: tables, doors, chairs, and small tools.
  3. Jesus helped his family and showed love by working. He was obedient and honest.
  4. We can copy Jesus by doing our work well and helping others kindly.

Suggested Learning Experiences (activities)

  • Story time: Tell a short story about Jesus helping Joseph in the workshop. Use a picture or puppet of Joseph and Jesus.
  • Role play: Children pretend to be carpenters using safe props — wooden blocks, cardboard, toy hammer. Let them build a small "bench" from blocks.
  • Draw and talk: Ask learners to draw Jesus working and show it to the class. Let each child say one sentence about the drawing.
  • Visit or show: Invite a local seremala (carpenter) or show pictures of carpentry in Kenya (making chairs, doors, school benches).
  • Help at home task: Give each child a simple task to do at home (sweep the floor, help set the table) and ask them to tell the class later.
  • Memory line: Teach the short line: "Jesus grew in wisdom and in good deeds" (repeat together, in English and Kiswahili).

Assessment (Easy checks)

  • Ask: "What job did Jesus learn?" (Expected: carpenter / seremala.)
  • Look at the child's drawing and ask them to tell one thing Jesus did while working.
  • Listen as the child says one way they helped at home — reward effort and praise.

Materials and Resources

Pictures of a workshop, wooden blocks, crayons, cardboard, toy tools, simple Bible story (Luke 2:51-52 or Mark 6:3 for teacher reference).

Values to emphasize

Hard work, obedience, helpfulness, honesty, respect for elders and community.

Short closing prayer (optional)

"Dear God, thank you for work. Help us to work well and to help our families, like Jesus. Amen."

Note for teachers: keep language simple, use Kiswahili where helpful (seremala = carpenter), use local examples (kitchen table, school bench) to make the lesson familiar.
