Subtopic: Joseph Interprets A Dream

This lesson tells about Joseph (from the Old Testament) who could understand dreams because God helped him. Even though Joseph had hard times, God used his gift of interpreting dreams to save many people.

Short Story (for age 9, simple)

  1. Joseph lived with his father Jacob and brothers. His brothers were jealous and sold him away as a slave. 😔
  2. Joseph worked in Egypt and later was put in prison for a while, even though he did not do wrong. 🏛️
  3. Two men in prison had dreams. Joseph told their dreams and told the meanings. One man got his job back. 🙌
  4. Later Pharaoh had strange dreams about cows and grain. The cupbearer remembered Joseph and told Pharaoh. 🐄🌾
  5. Joseph told Pharaoh what the dreams meant: seven years of good harvests and seven years of famine. Because of this, Pharaoh made Joseph a leader to save food for the hard years. 💼👑

Key Bible Verse (Memory)

"God will give Pharaoh a favorable answer." — Genesis 41:16 (simple idea)

Main Lessons (what children should learn)

  • God can help us even when life is hard.
  • Be honest and faithful — Joseph stayed faithful to God.
  • Use your gifts to help others (Joseph’s gift saved people in Egypt).
  • Forgiveness and patience are important (Joseph later forgave his brothers).

Teacher / Parent Guide (Kenyan context, age 9)

Time: 25–30 minutes. Start with a short prayer. Tell the story simply (use a simple picture or act out in a circle). Use local examples: “Imagine Joseph as a boy at school in Nairobi who can explain a friend’s worrying dream.” Keep language clear and calm.

Activities (fun and simple)

  • Draw the Dream — Give children paper and crayons. Draw Pharaoh’s dream: seven fat cows and seven thin cows, or seven full stalks and seven thin stalks. 🎨
  • Role-play — Children act: Joseph, Pharaoh, cupbearer. Use simple props (a scarf for a crown). Practice speaking kindly. 🎭
  • Memory Verse Game — Say the verse in parts; children repeat. Make it a whisper-and-shout chain. 🔁
  • Craft — Make a “dream scroll” by rolling paper and tying it with string. Write one lesson word inside (e.g., FAITH, HELP, FORGIVE). 📜

Simple Questions (for class or home)

  1. Who helped Joseph understand dreams?
  2. Why did Pharaoh trust Joseph?
  3. What did Joseph do when he became a leader?
  4. How can we use our gifts to help others at school or at home?

Short Answers (for teachers)

  • God helped Joseph understand dreams.
  • Because Joseph explained the dreams and gave wise plans; he showed truth and wisdom.
  • He stored food during the good years to save people in the famine.
  • By sharing, helping, being kind, and using talents in class or at home.

Closing Prayer (short)

Dear God, thank you for the story of Joseph. Help us to trust you, to use our gifts, and to be kind to others. Amen. 🙏

Note: This lesson is part of a series (Zacchaeus The Tax Collector). Joseph’s story is another Bible story that teaches trust in God and using gifts to help people.
