CRE Notes for Class 4–6 (Age 9)

Topic: The Teachings of Jesus Christ

Subtopic: The Parable of the Mustard Seed

Jesus told a short story called a parable to help people understand God's Kingdom. In this parable He said a tiny mustard seed becomes a very big plant. Even though the seed is very small, it can grow big and help many birds rest in its branches.

Bible reference: Matthew 13:31–32 and Luke 13:18–19

What Jesus teaches us

  • God's Kingdom can start very small but grow big (just like a tiny seed).
  • Small faith is important — even a little faith can grow when we trust God.
  • Good things that start small (kindness, prayers, church groups) can help many people.
Memory Verse:
"Though it is the smallest of all seeds, yet when it grows, it is the largest of garden plants." — Matthew 13:32 (easy words)

Questions (talk about these in class)

Activities (fun & simple)

  1. Plant a seed in a cup and watch it grow. Draw pictures each week to see changes.
  2. Make a small poster: "Small things can grow." Put a seed glued on the poster.
  3. Role play the parable: one child is the seed, others act as birds, sun, rain and the plant.
Short Prayer (say together):
Dear Jesus, help my small faith grow. Teach me to do small kind things that help others. Amen.
Teacher note (Kenyan context):
Use examples children know: a small maize or bean seed in a shamba, a small Sunday school group that grows to help many children, or a single act of kindness in the village spreading to others. Encourage pupils to share family stories about things that started small and became big.
