CRE Notes: Responsibility — School Property

Subject: Christian Religious Education (CRE)  •  Subtopic: School Property  •  Age: 9 years (Kenya)

Learning objectives:
  • Know what school property is.
  • Understand why we must care for school things (from God’s gift of stewardship).
  • Learn simple ways to protect and respect school property every day.

What is School Property? 📚🏫

School property means the things in your school that everyone uses. Examples: books, desks, chairs, the blackboard, sports equipment, toilets, fences, and the school garden.

Why must we care for school property? (Simple reasons)

  • It is a gift from God: We are stewards — God gives us things to look after.
  • It helps everyone learn: If books and desks are okay, all pupils learn better.
  • It shows love and respect: Caring for school property shows respect to others and to our teachers.
  • It saves money: When we care, the school does not spend too much fixing things.
Bible thought:

“God gives us things to care for.” (Think of Genesis 2:15 — people cared for the garden.)

Short idea: God trusts us. We must be careful with what we have.

How to care for school property — Simple actions ✅

  • Handle books with clean hands. Put books back on the right shelf after use.
  • Sit properly on chairs and do not stand on desks.
  • Use the blackboard carefully and wipe it clean when finished.
  • Keep toilets clean — flush and wash hands.
  • Help plant and water trees or flowers in the school garden.
  • Pick up paper and throw rubbish in the bin.
  • Tell a teacher if something is broken instead of hiding it.

What not to do ❌

  • Do not tear pages from books.
  • Do not write on desks or walls.
  • Avoid throwing stones at windows or breaking fences.
  • Do not take other people’s things without asking.
What happens when we care vs when we do not:

When we care: school looks beautiful, learning is better, and God is pleased. When we do not care: things get broken, other children suffer, and we may face school rules or punishments.

Class activity: The Stewardship Pledge ✍️

Ask pupils to copy this short pledge and sign it:

"I promise to care for my school's property, keep my place clean, and tell my teacher if anything is broken. I will be a good steward of God's gifts."

  2. How can we help keep the school garden healthy?
  3. Share a time you helped care for something at school.

Dear God, thank you for our school. Help us to care for the things you have given us. Make us good stewards so everyone can learn. Amen.
