CRE — Creation

Subtopic: Making Choices (Age 9)

What this lesson is about:

God gave people the world and the freedom to choose. Making good choices keeps us close to God, helps others, and cares for creation.

Learning objectives

  • Understand that God gave us freedom to choose.
  • Know simple examples of good and bad choices at home, school and church.
  • Learn a memory verse and say a short prayer asking God to help us choose well.

Bible story (simple)

In the beginning God made everything good. He gave Adam and Eve a beautiful garden and told them what was right. They could choose to obey God or not. When they chose badly, sadness came. God still loved them and showed a way back to Him. (See Genesis 1–3 — tell this story in your own words in class.)

Making choices — easy words

  • Choice: When you pick what to do. Example: share your pencil or not.
  • Good choice: Shows love, truth and care (e.g., help a friend, pray, pick up litter).
  • Wrong choice: Hurts others or God's creation (e.g., tell lies, cheat, break things on purpose).
  • Consequence: Every choice has a result — good or bad.
Remember: God wants us to choose what is right. He helps when we pray.
CHOICE
Which road will you pick? Green = good choices. Grey = wrong choices.

Simple examples (home, school, church)

  • Home: Help sweep the floor (good) / Break a toy on purpose (wrong).
  • School: Share your book (good) / Copy someone’s work (wrong).
  • Church: Listen during Sunday school (good) / Shout and disturb (wrong).
  • Environment: Plant a tree or pick up litter (good) / Waste water or drop litter (wrong).

Activities (for class or home)

  1. Role play: In groups, act out a choice and show the result (good and wrong). Discuss feelings.
  2. Draw: On one side draw a good choice you made; on the other side draw a wrong choice you changed to a good one.
  3. Circle the right choice (worksheet idea): Give short scenarios and let pupils circle the good choice.
  4. Prayer time: Say a short prayer asking God for help to choose well.

Memory verse

"Choose life so that you and your children may live." — Deuteronomy 30:19 (simple)

Ask pupils to say it aloud together three times.

Questions to discuss

  • What is one good choice you made this week?
  • What makes choosing right difficult sometimes?
  • How can God and our parents help us make good choices?
  • What will you choose today to show love for others or for creation?

Short prayer

Dear God, thank you for our world and the freedom to choose. Help me to choose what is good. Teach me to love others and take care of your creation. Amen.

Song idea

Sing a simple chorus about choosing Jesus or doing good — make hand actions for 'choose', 'help', 'love'.

Notes for teacher/parent:
  • Keep stories short and use examples from Kenyan daily life (home, market, school, church).
  • Praise pupils when they show good choices. Use role play and drawing — children learn by doing.
