CRE Notes: Helping Those in Need

Topic: The Teachings of Jesus Christ

Age: 9 years (Kenya) ❤️🤝

What this lesson is about

Jesus teaches us to love and help people who are poor, sick or in trouble. We learn how to be kind and share what we have at home, at church and in our Kenyan communities (Harambee spirit).

Learning outcomes

  • Explain one story Jesus told about helping others.
  • Say one way you can help someone at home or at school.
  • Memorize a short Bible verse about kindness.

Bible stories to remember

1. The Good Samaritan (Luke 10:25–37)

A man was hurt. A priest and a teacher walked past. But a Samaritan stopped, helped him and paid for his care. Jesus teaches us to love everyone and help people in need, even if they are different from us.

2. Jesus feeds the hungry (John 6:1–14)

A boy shared his small lunch. Jesus used it to feed thousands. Even a little we give can help when we share with love.

How this fits Kenya

In Kenya we practise Harambee — working together to help someone in need. Helping can be sharing food, collecting water, supporting a sick neighbour, or giving clothes to those who need them.

Simple ways you can help (Age 9)

  • Share your food or water with a friend who forgot theirs.
  • Help carry water or firewood for an elder.
  • Visit a lonely neighbour and greet them kindly.
  • Donate a toy or clothes you no longer use at church collection day.

Activity: Role play (10–15 minutes)

In groups of three, act out the Good Samaritan story. One is hurt, one passes by, one helps. After, talk about how it felt to help and to be helped.

Memory verse (short)

"Love your neighbour as yourself." — Luke 10:27

Reflection questions

  1. Who in your home or neighbourhood needs help? How can you help them?
  2. What did the Good Samaritan do that others did not?
  3. Why is sharing important in our community?

Short prayer

Dear Jesus, help me to see people who need help and give me the courage to help them. Teach me to share with love. Amen. 🕊️

Teacher tips
  • Use local examples (neighbour, church, school) so children relate easily.
  • Encourage small actions — kindness matters more than size of gift.
  • End with a group prayer and a small act (collect one item to give).
