CRE Notes: Showing Gratitude To God and Others
Topic: The Life of Jesus Christ
Subtopic: Showing Gratitude To God And Others
Class: CRE (age 9, Kenyan context)
Gratitude means saying "thank you" and feeling happy and thankful for what God and people give us. We can show it with words, actions and prayers.
How Jesus showed gratitude
- Jesus thanked God the Father: Before the Last Supper he gave thanks (Luke 22:19). He prayed and praised God often. π
- Jesus healed and forgave: When the ten lepers were healed, only one came back to say thank you (Luke 17:11β19). Jesus noticed and blessed him. β€οΈ
- Jesus served others: He fed the hungry (feeding of the 5,000) and showed love with actions, not only words. ππ
- Jesus taught thankful hearts: He told people to love and respect God and other people (Mark 12:30β31).
Why we should be thankful
- Gratitude pleases God and shows respect.
- It makes friends and family feel loved. π
- It helps us remember Godβs kindnessβlike food, family, school, teachers and church leaders.
- When we thank others, we build a kind and peaceful community (at home, at school, at church).
"Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good." β Psalm 107:1
Simple ways to show gratitude (daily)
- Say "Thank you" (or "Asante" in Kiswahili) to God in prayer every morning or before meals. π
- Say "Asante" or "Thank you" to parents, teachers, friends and neighbours. π
- Help at home: sweep, wash plates, fetch water β actions show thanks.
- Share with others: food, books or toys. Sharing is a way to say thank you for what God gave you. ππ
- Make a small thank-you card for someone who helped you. βοΈποΈ
Activity ideas for class or home
- Thank-you tree: Draw a tree on paper. Each leaf is something you are thankful for. Stick leaves on the tree.
- Role-play: Act out the story of the ten lepers. Practice saying thank you to Jesus and to each other.
- Prayer time: Sit in a circle and let each child thank God for one thing.
In Kenya we say "Asante" to thank someone. For God we say "Asante Mungu". You can pray in English, Kiswahili or your mother tongue!
Questions to think about (for class)
- Who are three people you can say "Asante" to this week?
- How did Jesus show thankfulness? Can you tell one story from the Bible?
- What will you do today to show gratitude?
Dear God, thank you for my family, my school and for Jesus. Help me to say "Asante" and to be kind to others. Amen. π
